Acid selection should not be based on a popular name or a strong sensation. Each tends to suit particular objectives and skin foundations. The complete formula, concentration, pH, and method of use are as important as the active ingredient name.

Salicylic acid

Salicylic acid can enter the oily environment of follicles, so it is commonly considered for oily, congested skin and some forms of acne. It also has properties that can support inflammation reduction. However, dry skin, a weakened barrier, or people sensitive to salicylates need careful assessment. Salicylic does not mean it suits every form of acne; deep inflammatory acne, infection, or acne with another cause needs a broader plan. Mandelic acid

Its effect can be clear, but the risk of stinging and irritation is also higher in a weak skin foundation. Effectiveness depends strongly on pH, concentration, solvent, and contact time. For this reason, two products both labelled glycolic can create very different reactions. DIVA does not select only by the percentage printed on a label.

Compare by objective rather than strength

For oily, congested skin, salicylic may be prioritised; for skin needing a more even tone but prone to sensitivity, mandelic may be considered; for a thick keratin layer and rough surface, glycolic may be suitable. However, these are directions, not fixed formulas. Many skin types have several concerns at the same time and may need controlled alternation or combination. What matters is selecting one main objective for the treatment session rather than trying to resolve everything with one strong acid.

Salicylic may dry the skin or create a temporary white layer depending on the formula; mandelic commonly feels lighter but can still peel; glycolic can sting and make the surface sensitive. Downtime is not fixed and should not be self-compared. Results commonly need to be assessed after skin has recovered: less congestion, a smoother surface, or more even tone. No acid removes deep scars or resolves melasma completely in one session.

Risks of self-use or self-mixing

Self-combining several acids, retinoids, and brightening products easily creates cumulative irritation. Clients may not see a burn immediately, but skin can gradually become red, dehydrated, develop small bumps, and be prone to dark marks. Home products have a different objective from professional peels; contact time or number of layers should not be increased to imitate a clinic.
